The Global University Technology Achievement Transformation Model Collection at the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum has chosen Jinan University’s case study titled “Accelerating the Industrialization of Large-scale High-efficiency Perovskite Photovoltaic Technology through Empowerment Reform.” The forum, which opened on March 27, 2025, in Beijing, focuses on the theme “New Quality Productivity and Global Technology Cooperation,” featuring 128 activities spanning five key areas: forum meetings, technology trading, achievement releases, cutting-edge competitions, and supporting activities.

Held on March 28-29, the Global Forum on Promoting University Technology Transfer was part of the annual meeting and took place at the Beijing Institute of Technology. This conference featured the release of the model collection, which showcases over 105 cases from more than 100 universities across 20 countries and regions—offering valuable insights and frameworks for universities, local governments, and enterprises worldwide.
The selected case from Jinan University is rooted in the work of Professor Mai Yaohua's team at the New Energy Technology Research Institute. It details successful empowerment reforms and the transformation of research and development in the field of “new engineering.” Perovskite solar cells, a rapidly advancing photovoltaic technology, promise to deliver greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional crystalline silicon and thin-film technologies. With significant potential for large-scale deployment in both grid-connected and distributed power generation, this technology is gaining industry attention.
Jinan University has facilitated the establishment of Guangdong Mailuo Energy Technology Co., Ltd. as part of this initiative, leveraging a model of empowerment + technology investment. The company has successfully completed three rounds of financing and launched a research and production headquarters for perovskite solar photovoltaic modules in the Huafa Sanxi 5.0 Industrial New Space in Xiangzhou District. Notably, it has developed a 100 MW production line for perovskite photovoltaic modules and successfully mass-produced a perovskite absorber film measuring 1.2 x 1.6 meters, bolstering China’s competitiveness in the next generation of photovoltaic technology.

In alignment with broader educational reforms, Jinan University has embraced the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's vision for innovation during his inspections of the institution. The university has implemented reforms granting scientific research personnel ownership or long-term use rights over their technological achievements. This initiative has fostered the three empowerment and dual pursuit model: scientific and technological empowerment, alumni empowerment, and financial empowerment. This strategy focuses on securing funding for research outcomes while also identifying practical applications for these achievements.
The Zhongguancun Forum, established in 2007 as a national platform for global scientific and technological exchange, emphasizes Innovation and Development as its permanent theme. This year's High Tech Promotion Conference included a global exhibition featuring university-driven technological achievements and transformation mechanisms. It specifically aimed to encourage coordinated development between universities, localities, and enterprises via high-quality scientific and technological transformations, and showcased innovations from regions such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
