In a commendable effort to bolster rural industry, the People's Government of Dungang Town, Shixing County, Guangdong Province, recently acknowledged the contributions of Nongyun Dungang Food Technology Innovation Practice Team from Jinan University. Their work has demonstrated the effectiveness of a new support model that combines rural science and technology experts with college students to drive high-quality development in agriculture.

The Initiative
Launched in February 2025 by Jiang Xinwei, an associate researcher and rural science and technology special commissioner at Jinan University, the initiative formed a dedicated practice group comprising students from the “Millions of High-quality Development Projects” commando within the College of Life Science and Technology. From February 20 to 28, the team undertook an intensive nine-day “Bring scientific and literacy knowledge and offer medical service to rural areas” social practice initiative in Dungang Town.
Research and Contributions
Focusing on the local water chestnut, chili, and specialty fruit industries, the team conducted comprehensive research and engaged with farming communities to identify key challenges facing these sectors. Through discussions with local county, town, and village officials, they gathered insights to craft solutions for the technical bottlenecks affecting the water chestnut industry and to address farmers’ low engagement with chili and specialty fruit cultivation.
1.Water chestnut Industry Development: The team produced a detailed 20,000-word research report that provides critical insights and actionable recommendations for the future of the water chestnut industry. They proposed the establishment of grading standards for water chestnut fruits and innovative techniques designed to extend the shelf life of these fruits.
2.Chili Pepper Innovations: In response to the local chili variety known as “Hanghong 27,” the students developed a low-spiciness and aromatic “Shixing Special Mixed Noodles Sauce.” This product was crafted to reflect local dietary preferences and utilize regional agricultural materials. The standardization of its production process is already underway.
3.Establishment of a Rural Workshop: With community support, the team revitalized the Dungang Town Village Cultural Center, transforming it into a rural revitalization workshop. The design for the production workshop has been completed, aiming to strengthen local food production capabilities.
4.Fruit Industry Research: The team also explored the abundant fruit resources in Dungang and surrounding areas, preparing to write a comprehensive report focusing on the local fruit industry. This includes plans for market analysis, factory layout, and process design to facilitate industry growth.
Future Endeavors
Jiang Xinwei articulated the potential of the “Millions of High-quality Development Projects Commando” as a dynamic force for rural revitalization. By combining the expertise of rural science and technology commissioners with the enthusiasm of college students, this model encourages greater technological adoption and innovation in rural practices, fostering sustainable economic development.

The partnership between the university and local communities exemplifies how collaborative efforts can bring about meaningful change, enhancing both agricultural outputs and socio-economic conditions in rural regions.
